Governor Pamela Baricuatro of Cebu has publicly assured residents that the province's fuel and rice supplies remain stable, despite ongoing tensions in the Middle East. This announcement was made on March 4, 2026, in response to concerns about potential shortages due to the conflict.
Stable Supply Amid Global Uncertainty
Baricuatro emphasized that there is no shortage of fuel or rice in Cebu, directly addressing fears that the Middle East situation could disrupt local markets. However, she acknowledged reports from retailers indicating that some basic commodities, particularly rice, have seen price increases. The governor's office has received several complaints about manipulated prices, which she attributes to the ongoing unrest in the Middle East.
Monitoring and Warnings Against Exploitation
In a stern warning to businesses, Baricuatro stated that her administration is actively monitoring the situation. She urged retailers not to take advantage of the geopolitical tensions to inflate prices. "Watch out because we are monitoring, and I'm urging that please do not take advantage of the situation," she said, highlighting the government's commitment to protecting consumers from unfair practices.
Proactive Measures and Preparedness
To mitigate any potential economic fallout from the Middle East conflict, the Cebu provincial government has implemented several relief measures. These steps are designed to cushion the impact on local residents and ensure continued access to essential goods. Additionally, Baricuatro revealed that the Kapitolyo has coordinated with national government agencies, such as the Overseas Workers and Welfare Administration (OWWA), to prepare for possible repatriation of Cebuano workers from affected areas.
So far, no requests for repatriation have been received, but Baricuatro confirmed that such plans were discussed as a precautionary measure. This proactive approach underscores the government's efforts to safeguard both the economic stability and personal safety of Cebuanos during this period of international tension.
