Cebu taxi drivers oppose 2,000 TNVS, 1,000 e-taxi franchises

The Cebu Group of Taxi Drivers Inc. has formally declared its opposition to the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board's (LTFRB) plan to issue 2,000 additional Transport Network Vehicle Service (TNVS) franchises and 1,000 electric taxi franchises in Cebu City. The announcement was made by Atty. Rey Gealon during the group's first general assembly on Tuesday, June 23, 2026, at the Old Sacred Heart School.

Unified protest against LTFRB's plan

Over 6,000 taxi drivers are members of the Cebu Group of Taxi Drivers Inc., and they have united to express their frustration with the government, particularly the LTFRB. According to Gealon, the planned issuance of additional franchises is unfair and unreasonable, especially since it did not undergo public consultation.

“It is clear that they are slowly killing the taxi drivers. They did not consult us, and we are already losing money from passengers,” Gealon said.

Declining income and rising competition

Gealon emphasized that the continuous increase in TNVS units has worsened the decline in taxi drivers' daily earnings. Many drivers now struggle to support their families due to reduced income. Previously, some drivers could earn over P1,000 per day, but now some are earning as little as P300 daily.

The group hopes that the LTFRB will listen to their concerns and suggestions. However, if they are ignored, they plan to bring the issue to Congress and call for a congressional hearing to air their side.
