It is a heartwarming sight to see bikers, skaters, runners, and other road mobility enthusiasts happily enjoying the streets temporarily closed every Sunday at Cebu Business Park and IT Park. For several years now, Ayala has demonstrated that it is possible to turn roads into places for health, recreation, and unity, not just thoroughfares for vehicles.

This initiative is commendable because it provides a safe space for families and children to run, play, and bond without fear of being hit by vehicles. In a city where concrete structures are increasing but open spaces are dwindling, a road that becomes a “playground” for the people even once a week is a big deal.

However, it is disheartening that a private company thought of this while Cebu City itself has not yet implemented a similar program. It is possible. The city has the power to manage its streets and could start with just a portion of Colon or Osmeña Boulevard every Saturday or Sunday. It is not necessary to close the entire road; a few hours would be enough to give people the freedom to move and breathe.

This would greatly benefit especially barangays where children have almost no playgrounds. For example, in Barangay San Antonio, the only basketball court on Pelaez Extension has been taken away. Where will the children play now? Where will they learn discipline, camaraderie, and healthy recreation?

Thus, this should be institutionalized through an ordinance so that regardless of who is in power, the program continues. Designate certain streets as “people’s streets” every weekend, safe for bikers, walkers, skaters, and families.

This is not just a traffic or sports project. It is a project for health, peace of mind, and strong family relationships. We have seen this in many night rides and Earth Hour events where thousands of families happily participated in our initiatives. The message is clear: if people are given safe space, they will come out, unite, and the community becomes healthier.

Sometimes, a closed road is not a hindrance to progress, but rather a path to a more vibrant city. Who among our councilors in Cebu City will sponsor an ordinance for this?
