Filipino seafarers continue to be in high demand worldwide, and the rapidly expanding superyacht sector is creating fresh career pathways for maritime professionals, according to industry experts speaking at an economic briefing in Cebu.
Global Demand for Filipino Seafarers
Economist Winston Padojinog highlighted that Filipino seafarers remain the top choice for vessel operators globally, making up approximately 14 percent of the world's maritime labor force—the largest share of any nationality. He noted that their remittances provide a stable source of foreign exchange, helping to sustain domestic consumption and economic growth despite geopolitical tensions and global trade disruptions.
Superyacht Industry Expansion
The global superyacht market is growing, with BOATPro data showing that 117 superyachts of at least 30 meters were delivered in 2026 alone. This reflects sustained investment in luxury vessels and increasing demand for qualified crew. The sector requires a blend of maritime skills and luxury guest service, opening opportunities for Filipinos known for hospitality, hard work, and professionalism.
Capt. Jead A. Advincula, principal of Cebu-based SAAP Corp., emphasized that a superyacht career offers an international pathway for Filipinos. He stated that owners and captains seek crew who are technically capable and trained to deliver high standards of guest service in multicultural environments. Demand is rising for deckhands, engineers, stewardesses, hospitality specialists, tender operators, and watersports professionals, with additional training in yacht detailing, powerboat handling, navigation, and guest services.
Economic Impact of Maritime Sector
The Philippine seafaring industry contributed an estimated P1.47 trillion in economic value from 2021 to 2024, according to a study by the Center for Research and Communication. In 2024 alone, the sector generated over P1.06 trillion, roughly four percent of GDP. The study also found that each peso spent by seafarers' households generates about P3.20 in economic activity, benefiting retail, transportation, housing, education, and other sectors.
Cebu as a Training Hub
Cebu is positioning itself as a key training center for aspiring yacht professionals, leveraging its strong maritime ecosystem, tourism industry, and coastal waters for practical training. SAAP Corp., with nine years in the industry, has completed over 2,000 yacht-related training sessions in deck, hospitality, communications, and powerboat programs. The school trains around 15 to 20 deck crew candidates and 10 hospitality students monthly. Advincula stressed that aspiring yacht crew must be hardworking, respectful, professional, and willing to learn, as the superyacht industry is highly competitive.
