Mactan Economic Zone Advances Sustainability with Major Infrastructure Upgrades
The Mactan Economic Zone (MEZ) is embarking on a significant wave of sustainability initiatives, as the Philippine Economic Zone Authority (Peza) intensifies efforts to enhance efficiency and environmental stewardship at the industrial hub. In a recent press release, Peza Director General Tereso O. Panga outlined several key projects designed to reduce the environmental impact of businesses operating within the zone.
Green Initiatives to Minimize Environmental Footprint
Among the planned projects are a thermal oxidation facility for treating hazardous waste, the implementation of advanced sewage treatment technology sourced from Denmark, and the proposed Microbridge Solar Project. This solar initiative aims to deliver clean, renewable, and cost-efficient energy to support the zone's operations. These efforts align with broader goals to promote sustainable industrial practices and reduce carbon emissions.
Modern Power Infrastructure Upgrade
Coinciding with these sustainability measures, the Mactan Electric Company, Inc. (Meco) has energized a new mobile substation on March 9, 2026. This 3–20 MVA, 13.8 kV substation replaces aging transformers that have been in service for over forty years. According to Meco senior vice president and general manager Gilbert A. Pagobo, the upgrade is expected to improve operational efficiency, enhance system reliability, and expand capacity to meet growing power demands while minimizing service disruptions.
Industry and Government Support
MEZ acting administrator Arnel M. Suyu emphasized that this project is a crucial step in modernizing the zone's power infrastructure, ensuring a stable electricity supply essential for industrial activity and economic growth. Industry locators have welcomed the upgrade, with Mepzcem president Lorena Baluran praising the improved reliability and highlighting Meco's strong partnership with businesses, as well as Peza's ongoing support for a conducive business environment.
Panga noted that this mobile substation is the first of its kind in the Philippines, reinforcing MEZ's reputation as a reliable industrial hub. He stressed that dependable energy systems are vital for maintaining the global competitiveness of Peza-registered firms. Meco president Douglas Luym reaffirmed the company's commitment to providing reliable and competitively priced electricity to support the zone's operations.
Located in Lapu-Lapu City, the 150-hectare MEZ continues to evolve as a key player in the region's economic landscape, driven by these innovative sustainability and infrastructure enhancements.
