MSMEs Achieve P5.2 Million in Sales at Tawi-Tawi Ramadhan Night Market
In a significant boost to local commerce, fifty-three micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) supported by the Ministry of Trade, Investments and Tourism (MTIT) have generated an impressive P5.2 million in sales as of Monday, March 2, at the Ramadhan Night Market in Bongao, Tawi-Tawi. This vibrant event, now in its third year, highlights the thriving partnership between the Provincial Government of Tawi-Tawi and the MTIT provincial office to foster economic growth and cultural promotion.
Sales Performance and Growth Factors
According to Ifrad Hussin, MTIT Tawi-Tawi trade-industry development specialist, the sales figure of P5.2 million nearly matches last year's total of P5.9 million, indicating robust market activity. Hussin attributed this strong performance to key factors, including an increase in exhibitors from 44 last year to 53 this year and an earlier opening of stalls, which began as early as February 19, though the market officially launched on February 26.
The night market serves as a crucial platform for MSMEs to showcase and sell their products during the holy month of Ramadhan, operating daily from 6 p.m. to 11 p.m. and featuring a diverse array of native food, clothing, and merchandise. This initiative not only drives sales but also encourages informal businesses to formalize their operations, contributing to a more structured local economy.
MTIT Support and Community Impact
The MTIT has played a pivotal role in this success by providing comprehensive technical support to the participating enterprises. This includes essential training in food safety and halal awareness, assistance with business name registration, and daily monitoring to ensure smooth operations. Such measures are designed to enhance the competitiveness and sustainability of MSMEs in the region.
By offering a dedicated space for local entrepreneurs, the Ramadhan Night Market not only boosts economic indicators but also strengthens community ties and cultural heritage, making it a cornerstone event for Tawi-Tawi. The continued growth in exhibitor numbers and sales underscores the effectiveness of government-private sector collaborations in driving regional development.
