SRA Invests PHP27 Million in Mechanization to Boost Philippine Sugar Industry

The Sugar Regulatory Administration (SRA) has taken a significant step toward modernizing the country's sugarcane sector by distributing PHP27 million worth of mechanization machinery and equipment to support Filipino sugar farmers. The turnover ceremony occurred on Thursday, April 16, 2026, at the La Granja Agricultural Research and Extension Center (LGAREC) compound, where heavy-duty vehicles and tractors were handed over to various agricultural organizations.

Mechanization as a Necessity

In a statement, SRA Administrator and CEO Pablo Luis Azcona emphasized that mechanization is no longer a luxury but a critical necessity for the sugarcane industry. "Our goal is to bring the Philippine sugar industry into a new era of efficiency. By providing these machineries, we are directly reducing the physical and financial burden on our farmers," Azcona said. He highlighted that this initiative aims to tackle pressing challenges such as rising production costs and declining soil health.

Azcona added that the equipment will improve hauling efficiency, field preparation, and the transport of soil amendments and farm inputs. "This equipment will allow our partners to implement soil rejuvenation techniques at scale, ensuring that our sugarcane fields remain productive for the next generation of sugar farmers," he noted.

Support from Industry Representatives

David Andrew Sanson, Board Member-Planters’ Representative, praised the SRA's move, calling it a "win" for planters. "Access to this level of machinery empowers our farmers to be more independent and cost-effective," Sanson stated. He vowed to utilize the resources to make the sugar industry more profitable for local producers, underscoring the importance of this support in enhancing agricultural sustainability.

Distribution of Equipment

The SRA distributed five dump trucks to key organizations across the country, including:

  • Iloilo Mill District Development Council Inc.
  • Capiz Mill District Development Council Foundation Inc.
  • New Namangka Farmers Association in Mabinay, Negros Oriental
  • Norphil Farmers Multi-Purpose Cooperative in Piat, Cagayan
  • Sugarcane Growers Association of Bukidnon Inc.

Additionally, other groups received specialized units for hauling. The Cabungbungan Lingahob Farmers Association was granted one hauling truck, while the Northern Negros Sugar Development Council Inc. received one hauling truck and one farm tractor equipped with complete implements. This strategic distribution aims to address regional needs and boost productivity nationwide.

Impact on the Sugar Industry

This PHP27 million investment is expected to have a transformative effect on the Philippine sugar industry. By reducing labor costs and improving operational efficiency, the mechanization efforts are projected to enhance overall profitability and competitiveness. The initiative aligns with broader goals of sustainable agriculture, as it promotes soil health and long-term field productivity.

As the SRA continues to support farmers through such programs, the focus remains on fostering a resilient and forward-thinking sugarcane sector that can thrive amid global agricultural challenges.
