The Davao Light and Power Company has officially announced the commencement of vegetation clearing operations along its power distribution lines in the Island Garden City of Samal, commonly referred to as Igacos. This critical maintenance activity, which started on March 16, 2026, is essential for enhancing the reliability of the electrical service but may result in temporary power interruptions across certain areas of the island.
Maintenance Efforts to Improve Power Reliability
In a statement released on March 16, 2026, Davao Light emphasized the importance of this vegetation clearing initiative. The company explained that overgrown trees and branches that come into contact with power lines are among the most frequent causes of power outages. By systematically clearing vegetation along the distribution lines, Davao Light aims to maintain a safer electrical system and significantly reduce the risk of unexpected power disruptions.
The utility company has cautioned residents that brief power outages might be implemented in specific locations while maintenance crews carry out the clearing work. These temporary shutdowns are necessary to ensure the safety of line workers as they perform their duties. Davao Light has also urged the public to maintain a safe distance from active work sites and to avoid passing through areas where clearing operations are ongoing.
Resident Concerns and Recent Outages
Some residents in Igacos have expressed growing concerns regarding recurring power interruptions since Davao Light began its operations on the island. The Davao Consumer Movement voiced its disappointment on March 13, highlighting issues such as prolonged brownouts and slower response times from the utility provider.
"While we recognize that transitions take time, this rough start has created the impression that Davao Light was unprepared to serve its new consumers," the group stated. Earlier, on March 15, Davao Light reported an emergency power interruption in the Kinawitnon and Caliclic areas after a coconut tree collapsed and damaged a power pole. Additional outages have occurred in other regions due to ongoing repairs and maintenance activities.
Submarine Cable Project Progress
In related developments, Davao Light has successfully completed the laying of submarine power cables across the Pakiputan Strait. This project is a key component of efforts to link the power grids of Davao City and the Island Garden City of Samal, aiming to stabilize the island's electricity supply and support its increasing demand.
A specialized cable-laying vessel, supported by technical experts and divers, installed the cables along one of the narrowest sections of the strait to minimize environmental impact. The submarine cable, manufactured in China according to precise specifications, measures 1,015 meters in length.
The 69-kilovolt project is anticipated to be fully operational by mid-2026. Once completed, it will play a crucial role in enhancing the stability of Samal's power supply. The next phase involves divers securing the submarine cables underwater and constructing cable terminal stations at the shoreline ends in both Davao City and Samal.
Davao Light concluded its statement by thanking residents for their understanding and cooperation, underscoring that these maintenance efforts are vital for improving the overall reliability and safety of the power service in the region.
