DOE Secretary Garin Optimistic About Malampaya East-1 Deployment Amid Oil Crisis
Department of Energy (DOE) Secretary Sharon Garin has expressed confidence that the Malampaya East-1 (MAE-1) gas reserve can be made available in the near future to assist in alleviating the worsening oil crisis in the Philippines. In an interview with Bombo Radyo, Secretary Garin discussed the potential for utilizing this newly discovered gas reserve if conflicts in the Middle East persist for several more months.
Government and Private Sector Collaboration Key
Garin emphasized that the government and private investors are working together to expedite the process, citing the smooth progress of extensive exploration and development activities in the Malampaya Gas Field. She highlighted that Malampaya serves as a protective measure for the Philippine oil industry by providing a local reserve, reducing the need for imports from oil-producing nations.
Technical Challenges and Energy Mix Considerations
However, Garin clarified that it is not yet certain whether MAE-1 will be suitable for the country's energy mix, as all technical issues related to its integration must first be resolved. Despite this, the government has already engaged with investors of the gas field to explore ways to accelerate the process and fully utilize the newly discovered reserve.
Background on the Discovery and Security Measures
On January 19, 2026, President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. announced the discovery of up to 98 billion cubic feet of natural gas in the area. Since then, the Armed Forces of the Philippines have intensified surveillance efforts, particularly due to the site's proximity to Philippine territories claimed by China. Malampaya East-1 is located five kilometers east of the existing Malampaya Gas Field.
