Metro Dumaguete Water Boosts Efficiency Amid Fuel Price Surge from Middle East Crisis
Dumaguete Water Firm Tackles Fuel Costs with Efficiency Drive

Metro Dumaguete Water Strengthens Operations as Fuel Costs Soar

Metro Dumaguete Water is intensifying its efforts to improve operational efficiency in response to a projected surge in water production costs, driven by escalating fuel prices linked to the ongoing Middle East crisis. The utility company, which relies on diesel-powered pumps to extract water from 22 deep wells, warns that delivery expenses could double if fuel prices exceed P80 per liter due to prolonged conflict in the region.

Impact of Fuel Price Hikes on Water Services

Chief Operating Officer Engr. Robert R. Cabiles highlighted that the company uses oil by-products, gasoline, and diesel not only for water extraction but also for other equipment and motor vehicles. "While operating costs continue to rise, we call on our consumers to observe responsible water use to contribute to the sustainability of our groundwater sources and reliable service," Cabiles stated. This appeal comes as the utility faces mounting financial pressures from volatile energy markets.

Innovative Measures to Enhance Efficiency

To mitigate these challenges, Metro Dumaguete Water has implemented several strategic initiatives:

  • Introduction of Variable Frequency Drive technology at pumping stations to optimize power usage while maintaining productivity.
  • Investment in a camera logger, the first of its kind in the region, for detailed inspection and analysis of deep well conditions.
  • Electromechanical updates to pumping stations aimed at reducing energy consumption.
  • Rehabilitation of over 11 kilometers of pipelines to minimize water losses and improve distribution network integrity.

These efforts have already yielded significant results, including a 7% decrease in power usage while increasing water output for customers, marking a critical step in offsetting the impact of oil price fluctuations.

Commitment to Reliable Water Supply Amid Challenges

Despite the economic strain, Metro Dumaguete Water remains dedicated to providing safe and reliable water to Dumaguete City. "Metro Dumaguete Water reaffirms its commitment to provide safe and reliable water supply for Dumaguete City, even as it continues to navigate through the higher cost of production in this unusual time," Cabiles emphasized. The company, a joint venture between Dumaguete City Water District and Metro Pacific Water, has been operating the city's water system since February 2021, continuously investing in infrastructure to ensure cost-effective and dependable service.
