SM Seaside Cebu Arena Set to Drive Economic Growth for Cebu's MICE Industry
The Cebu Mice Alliance's ambitious target of generating at least P1 billion in economic contributions for Cebu by 2029 is gaining significant momentum with the impending launch of the SM Seaside Cebu Arena in June 2026. This state-of-the-art venue, developed by SM Prime Holdings Inc., is poised to become a cornerstone for the province's meetings, incentives, conventions, and exhibitions (MICE) sector, leveraging large-scale infrastructure to attract a diverse array of international and domestic events.
Addressing a Critical Gap in Cebu's Events Landscape
Industry experts have long highlighted a notable void in Cebu's events ecosystem: the lack of a purpose-built, high-capacity indoor facility capable of accommodating major international concerts, sporting competitions, and large-scale conventions. The SM Seaside Cebu Arena, with its impressive 25,000-seat capacity, is designed to fill this gap, positioning itself as the largest indoor arena in the region. Situated within the integrated South Coast City estate, the arena spans a building footprint of approximately 1.6 hectares and boasts a total gross floor area of around 7.4 hectares, offering ample space for versatile event programming.
Strategic Partnerships and Enhanced Features
Even before its official opening, SM Prime has proactively engaged with key stakeholders to ensure a robust event pipeline. In a recent disclosure to the local bourse on February 24, the company revealed ongoing discussions with concert promoters, sports federations, family entertainment producers, and corporate event organizers. This early interest underscores the arena's potential to become a premier destination for diverse gatherings. Jeffrey Lim, President of SM Prime, emphasized the broader impact, stating, "By building a venue of this scale in Cebu, we are strengthening the Visayas as a destination for international events, domestic tourism, and long-term investment."
The arena will feature advanced amenities to enhance the attendee experience, including:
- Multi-level spectator areas for optimal viewing
- Professional-grade sports and entertainment systems
- Corporate suites and VIP lounges for exclusive access
- A variety of food and beverage concepts to cater to diverse tastes
- A SkyBridge connecting the arena to the SMX Convention Center Cebu and SM Seaside City Cebu, facilitating seamless visitor movement within the complex
Building on a Proven Track Record
This project leverages SM Prime's extensive experience in operating large-scale venues, most notably the SM Mall of Asia Arena, which opened in 2012 and has successfully hosted numerous global concerts and sporting events. The Cebu Mice Alliance has previously identified several foundational elements supporting the growth of Cebu's MICE industry, such as an expanding hotel inventory, improved air connectivity via the Mactan-Cebu International Airport, and a growing portfolio of integrated developments. The addition of the SM Seaside Cebu Arena is expected to further solidify these foundations, driving economic benefits and elevating Cebu's status as a competitive events hub in the Philippines and beyond.
