Iloilo City to Launch Free Innovation Hub for Emerging Enterprises
Iloilo City is set to boost its entrepreneurial ecosystem by transforming its Business One-Stop Shop Center at Festive Walk into a dedicated innovation hub. This initiative aims to provide a supportive environment for startups, local innovators, and Ilonggo youth entrepreneurs, offering them a space to develop their ideas without the financial burden of renting private offices.
Addressing the Needs of Early-Stage Businesses
Velma Jane Lao, City Local Economic Development and Investment Promotion officer, highlighted the challenges faced by small businesses. "Because they are still small and in the research and development phase for their products, it is too expensive for them to rent space," she explained. The hub will be open and free to all eligible participants, addressing this critical barrier to growth.
The innovation hub will feature a shared space for pitching and meetings, an exhibition area for outputs and products, and a co-working area that startups can use as their official office address. This setup is designed to foster collaboration and visibility for emerging enterprises, which have become an increasingly important economic driver for Iloilo City.
Collaborative Efforts for a Conducive Environment
To ensure the hub's success, the city has partnered with key regional offices and private entities. The Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) will provide essential equipment, while the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) will offer operational support. Megaworld Lifestyle Malls is also involved in this partnership, contributing to the project's infrastructure.
The City Government will oversee the relayout of the space and manage the maintenance of Common Use Service Area fees. The project is expected to be completed within the year, marking a significant step forward in supporting local innovation.
Expanding Support Through Legislative Measures
In addition to the physical hub, a proposed ordinance to further support startups is currently being drafted by the Committee on Trade, Commerce, and Industry of the Iloilo City Council. This legislative effort aims to create a more robust framework for entrepreneurial development in the city.
The transformation into an innovation hub was initiated by Mayor Raisa Treñas, following extensive consultations with startup groups, including Umwad Western Visayas (Unified Movement in Western Visayas to Accelerate Startups and Spin-off Development). Lao noted, "Mayor Raisa is very happy because this is in response to the articulated needs of our startup groups. This was her idea to temporarily make it an innovation hub for startups, as it would be a waste not to utilize the space effectively."
Strategic Location and Future Impact
The Business One-Stop Shop Center in Festive Walk is one of four offsite centers in Iloilo City, with others located in The Atrium, Mary Mart Mall, and SM City. This strategic placement ensures accessibility for entrepreneurs across the city, enhancing the hub's potential to drive economic growth and innovation.
By providing free resources and a collaborative environment, Iloilo City aims to nurture its startup community, positioning itself as a hub for creativity and economic advancement in the region.
