IPOPHL Requires IP Protection for Presidential Filipinnovation Awards

The Intellectual Property Office of the Philippines (IPOPHL) is actively encouraging Filipino innovators, researchers, and entrepreneurs to secure intellectual property (IP) protection as an essential step for participating in the Presidential Filipinnovation Awards. This initiative is designed to accelerate the commercialization of local innovations and enhance their global competitiveness.

Updated Guidelines for the National Competition

According to updated guidelines, all entries submitted to the national innovation competition must feature technologies that already have registered intellectual property or at least a pending IP application. IPOPHL officials emphasize that this requirement is crucial for transforming Filipino inventions into viable businesses and products that can compete on an international scale.

IPOPHL Deputy Director General Ann Claire Credo-Cabochan stated that this rule reinforces the agency's mission to establish a robust IP system. "It is our mission to establish a strong IP system that supports innovation, inspiring our inventors, creators, and scientists to produce more impactful products and services. These innovations will improve our way of life, help businesses grow, and positively impact economic development," Credo-Cabochan said in an official statement.

Benefits of IP Registration

As an ex officio member of the National Innovation Council, IPOPHL highlights that the rule aims to motivate innovators to formally protect their trademarks, patents, utility models, and industrial designs. Credo-Cabochan explained that IP registration not only safeguards inventions but also facilitates commercialization efforts.

"It is through registration that your IP is protected. Registration also enables you to commercialize, attract investors, scale up production, and access both local and foreign markets," she added. This approach is expected to drive economic growth by supporting early-stage innovations that contribute to national development.

Eligibility and Recognition

The Presidential Filipinnovation Awards, established under Executive Order 99, is the country's highest recognition for early-stage or market-ready Filipino innovations. Organized by the National Innovation Council and implemented by the Department of Economy, Planning and Development, the annual competition targets innovations that are already in the early stages of commercialization.

Eligible applicants must be Filipino citizens or enterprises that are at least 60 percent Filipino-owned and registered with authorities such as the Department of Trade and Industry, the Securities and Exchange Commission, or the Cooperative Development Authority. Innovations must have a functional prototype or operational model, along with proof of IP registration or a pending application.

Five finalists with the highest rankings will receive the Presidential Filipinnovation Award, along with grants and post-competition support to help scale their innovations. This comprehensive framework aims to foster a culture of innovation and economic advancement in the Philippines.
