The city of Davao is making significant strides in its ambitious public transport modernization, with more than 6,000 Public Utility Jeepney (PUJ) drivers and operators now equipped for the transition. This milestone was achieved through a comprehensive two-day capability enhancement training, a core component of the Davao Bus Project's Social Development Program (SDP).
Empowering Drivers for a New Era
Designed as a crucial preparatory step, the training aims to ensure all project beneficiaries are ready for the Davao Bus system's full operation. The sessions, which concluded for the 22nd batch on December 10 and 11 at the Grand Menseng Hotel, covered essential life and skills topics. These included modules on personal development, financial literacy, cultivating an entrepreneurial mindset, gender sensitivity, and employment facilitation.
To support participants during the program, each attendee received a training allowance. This initiative acknowledged the potential loss of daily income and demonstrated the project's commitment to the welfare of existing transport workers.
Voices from the Training Ground
The training served a dual purpose: educating drivers and opening a direct line for communication. Marlon Sayson, a PUJ driver and operator with 14 years of experience, shared his experience with the City Information Office (CIO). He highlighted how the program cleared up widespread confusion and rumors that had previously surrounded the project.
"Our questions were finally answered because before, there were so many rumors and it was very difficult. Now we know what their real pursuit is, what they really want to do," Sayson stated in the local vernacular.
He admitted that many drivers, including himself, initially feared being left without a livelihood. "We thought we would be 'watered' [left behind]. Of course, as operators and drivers, we thought about where we would go. It was very difficult. Now we truly know that what they want is good. The goal of Davao in doing this is really for the good of all of us, not just us but also the commuters," he added.
A Call to Fellow Drivers
With his perspective transformed, Sayson actively encouraged other PUJ drivers and operators who have not yet undergone the training to participate. He emphasized the value of understanding their future role and the support system the government is establishing.
"To my fellow drivers, it is better to come here so we know our position and how the government will assist us," he urged. His testimonial underscores the training's role in building trust and aligning the drivers' interests with the project's broader goals of improving urban mobility for all Dabawenyos.
The Davao Bus Project continues to move forward, with inaugural trips already launched on routes like Toril starting Friday, December 5, 2025, and other routes commencing operations. The successful training of thousands of drivers marks a critical human-centric phase in this major infrastructure overhaul.
