The Cebu City Government has taken swift action to ensure public safety by imposing a temporary ban on trucks using the Bacayan Bridge. This decisive move follows a directive from Mayor Nestor Archival after the bridge exhibited signs of potential structural failure.
Immediate Safety Measures Enforced
Effective Wednesday, November 12, 2025, the city issued a traffic advisory that prohibits all trucks with six wheels and above from crossing the Bacayan Bridge. The restriction will remain in place until further notice. This precaution was initiated after the City's engineering team identified worrying signs of structural compromise on the bridge, prompting an immediate need to restrict heavy vehicles to prevent further damage and ensure citizen safety.
Alternative Route for Essential Services
To minimize disruption to vital services, the Department of Engineering and Public Works (DEPW) has established an official diversion route. This alternative path, which became active starting 12 a.m., runs from Tigbao, Talamban toward Barangays San Jose and Pulangbato, and vice versa. This ensures that essential operations like garbage collection, disaster response, and commercial deliveries can continue without interruption. The Cebu City Transportation Office (CCTO) is deploying personnel to key points along the diversion to assist and guide truck drivers, especially during the initial implementation phase.
Ongoing Assessment and Public Advisory
The truck ban is a temporary measure pending the outcome of a full structural assessment being conducted by relevant city and national agencies. Motorists, especially those operating heavy vehicles, are strongly advised to plan their routes in advance. Authorities are calling for public cooperation to help minimize traffic congestion in the affected areas surrounding the bridge and the new diversion route.
