President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. has issued a directive to fast-track the restoration of transport hubs in Aurora province and to expand the Baler Airport. This decisive move aims to strengthen the region's disaster response capabilities and ensure reliable operations during future calamities.
Post-Typhoon Recovery Initiative
The presidential order comes in the wake of the devastation caused by Super Typhoon Uwan, which severely battered the province. The typhoon damaged several key transport centers, leading to significant mobility disruptions and hampering the distribution of essential relief goods and services to affected communities.
Acting Transportation Secretary Giovanni Lopez confirmed that the Department of Transportation (DOTr) has been instructed to extend and widen the existing runway at Baler Airport. This crucial upgrade will allow the airport to accommodate larger aircraft, which are vital for large-scale relief, medical, and emergency missions in this typhoon-prone area.
Comprehensive Airport Development Plan
The DOTr has outlined a comprehensive development plan for the airport. In addition to the runway expansion, the agency will construct a new Passenger Terminal Building (PTB) to improve passenger handling and comfort.
The development plan also includes the construction of police barracks and general upgrades to existing airport facilities, creating a more robust and secure transportation hub for Aurora.
Project Timeline and Impact
According to the official schedule released by the DOTr, the project is set to commence in the first quarter of 2026. The agency is targeting to complete all works by 2027.
This infrastructure push is a critical component of the national government's strategy to enhance resilience against natural disasters. By creating a more reliable and capable air gateway in Aurora, the government aims to prevent the severe service delays experienced after Typhoon Uwan and ensure a swift and efficient flow of aid during future emergencies.
