The Philippine Health Insurance Corporation (PhilHealth) has reminded individuals who smoke or vape and are at risk of lung-related illnesses that they can access screening and treatment benefit packages. This announcement came in a social media post during the observance of No Smoking Month.
Low-dose CT scan screening covered
PhilHealth stated that screening is available through its Low-dose Chest CT Scan (LDCT) benefit package, which costs P7,220. Eligible individuals are those aged 50 to 80 years old with risk factors, including long-term smoking, current smoking, having quit within the past 15 years, or having a close relative with lung cancer.
Treatment packages for lung conditions
The state-run health insurer also offers treatment benefit packages for lung diseases. The Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) package amounts to P23,790, while the Pneumonia (Moderate Risk) package is set at P29,250. Additionally, the Outpatient TB-DOTS Package is available for P7,800, broken down into P2,925 for the Intensive Phase and P4,875 for the Continuation Phase.
DOH encourages quitting smoking and vaping
The Department of Health (DOH) urged the public to consider quitting smoking and vaping to avoid lung-related illnesses. According to the DOH, quitting is possible despite nicotine addiction. "Quitting is not easy, but it is possible. What is important is to continue taking steps towards a healthier and smoke-free life," the DOH said. The department is prepared to provide assistance through the DOH Quitline 1558, a hotline for those needing professional help in quitting.
