Bicol Wage Hike Effective April 8: P20 Increase Announced

Bicol Region Minimum Wage Increase Takes Effect on April 8

The Regional Tripartite Wages and Productivity Board (RTWPB) has officially announced that a P20 increase in the minimum wage for the Bicol Region will become effective starting April 8, 2026. This decision follows thorough deliberations held on March 3, as confirmed by DOLE Bicol Regional Director Imelda Gatinao.

Consultations and Public Hearings Lead to Wage Adjustment

According to Gatinao, the wage hike is the result of extensive consultations across all six provinces in the region and two public hearings that commenced in January. The current minimum wage stands at P435, which is notably lower than the poverty threshold of P460. When adjusted for inflation, the real wage value is only P320, highlighting the economic pressures faced by workers.

Two-Tranche Implementation Plan

To address this gap, the board agreed on a total increase of P45, to be implemented in two phases:

  • The first tranche of P20 will take effect on April 8, 2026.
  • The second tranche of P25 is scheduled for implementation in December 2026.

Once fully implemented, the minimum wage in the Bicol Region will rise to P480, surpassing the current poverty threshold and providing much-needed relief to employees.

Impact on Local Businesses and Economy

Data from the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) reveals that 92.6% of businesses in Bicol are micro-establishments, with the majority operating in the service sector, including transportation, tourism, hotels, and retail. This wage increase is expected to support workers in coping with the ongoing rise in commodity prices, though it may also pose challenges for small enterprises.

Recognition of Collaborative Efforts

Gatinao expressed gratitude to the RTWPB members, which include representatives from the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), the Department of Development (DepDev), two worker representatives, and two management sector representatives. This collaborative effort underscores the importance of tripartite dialogue in addressing labor and economic issues.

The wage hike is seen as a significant step toward alleviating the financial strain on workers amid persistent inflation, contributing to improved living standards in the region.
