Taiwan Opens Doors to Filipino Domestic Workers Amid Middle East Crisis
Taiwan Now Accepting Filipino Domestic Workers

Taiwan Emerges as New Destination for Filipino Household Service Workers

In a significant development for overseas Filipino workers (OFWs), Taiwan is now being viewed as a promising destination for Filipino household service workers (HSWs), according to a local recruitment consultant. This shift comes as the Middle East faces instability, prompting a need for alternative employment opportunities.

Opportunities Amid Middle East Repatriation

Emmanuel Geslani, a recruitment consultant, highlighted that Taiwan households are opening their doors to migrant workers, starting this year. "Our friendly neighbor up North will now accept Filipina domestic helpers starting this year," said Geslani. He emphasized that this development is particularly beneficial for workers recently repatriated from war-torn Middle Eastern nations.

Geslani noted, "The country has a large supply of experienced domestic helpers with deployment of household service workers expected to decline in the next few months in the Middle East." Since the outbreak of conflict in the Middle East, the Department of Migrant Workers has already repatriated 2,630 OFWs from affected areas, underscoring the urgency for new job markets.

Requirements and Benefits for Applicants

According to Taiwan's Ministry of Labor, families in Taiwan with at least one child under the age of 12 are eligible to hire migrant domestic helpers. To qualify, applicants must undergo specialized household training and a short Mandarin language course. The ministry has implemented a "No Placement Fee" policy, reducing financial barriers for Filipino workers seeking employment.

The minimum monthly wage for these positions is set at NT$20,000, which is equivalent to approximately P40,000 pesos. This competitive salary, combined with the proximity to the Philippines, makes Taiwan an attractive option for OFWs looking for stable and lucrative opportunities abroad.

Implications for the Filipino Workforce

This move by Taiwan could help alleviate the employment crisis faced by repatriated OFWs, providing a safer and more accessible alternative to the volatile Middle East region. With its structured requirements and supportive policies, Taiwan is positioning itself as a key player in the global migrant labor market, offering hope and economic stability to Filipino households dependent on remittances.
