DOLE's Zamboanga Job Fair Secures On-the-Spot Hires for Construction Sector
The Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) has announced a successful outcome from its recent Project DOLE Action Plan and Transition Program (Dapat) Construction Job Fair held in Zamboanga City. On Thursday, March 26, 2026, the event at KCC Mall de Zamboanga's convention center led to 19 jobseekers being hired-on-the-spot (HOTS), marking a significant boost for local employment in the construction industry.
Job Fair Details and Employer Participation
DOLE-Zamboanga Peninsula reported that the job fair attracted 21 local employers who collectively offered 1,851 job vacancies tailored for skilled workers in construction and related sectors. This robust participation underscores the high demand for labor in these fields, providing ample opportunities for displaced and unemployed individuals to re-enter the workforce.
The positions filled during the event showcased a diverse range of roles, including:
- Mechanical engineer: 1
- Office staff: 2
- Stockman: 2
- Housekeeping: 1
- Encoder: 1
- Service crew: 5
- Delivery rider: 1
- Production workers: 4
- Recorder: 1
- Sales associate: 1
DOLE-Zamboanga Peninsula emphasized that this variety highlights the broad employment prospects available for skilled workers in the region.
Success Stories and Jobseeker Experiences
Among the successful applicants was Fatima Bauddin, who secured a position as a Mechanical Engineer at Vicente T. Lao Construction. As a first-time jobseeker, Bauddin shared her positive experience, noting, "My whole experience during the job fair was smooth as the staffs were very accommodating. For those first-time jobseekers, I invite you to try looking for a job through job fairs." Her testimony reflects the supportive environment fostered by the event.
The job fair gathered 192 registered jobseekers, with an additional 88 near-hires who are still completing pre-employment requirements. DOLE-Zamboanga Peninsula will monitor these near-hires for up to 30 days to ensure their successful transition into employment, demonstrating ongoing commitment to workforce development.
Comprehensive Support Services
Beyond employment opportunities, the job fair featured extensive support services to assist jobseekers. 12 government agencies participated in a One-Stop-Shop, providing pre-employment assistance, with 102 jobseekers availing of these services. Additionally, the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (Tesda) conducted skills assessments during the event, helping to match candidates with suitable roles.
Career Development Support (CDS) services were also available, supported by various Job Placement Offices (JPOs) from government and private educational institutions. These services aided jobseekers in aligning their skills with available employment opportunities, enhancing their chances of securing positions.
Organizational Efforts and Future Initiatives
The Project Dapat Construction Job Fair was organized by DOLE-Zamboanga Peninsula in partnership with government agencies and private stakeholders. It aims to support displaced workers in the construction sector through employment facilitation and workforce transition services. DOLE-Zamboanga Peninsula stated that this event is part of its continuing efforts to assist displaced workers via employment facilitation, skills development support, and strengthened collaboration with industry partners.
This initiative not only addresses immediate employment needs but also contributes to long-term economic stability in Zamboanga City by connecting skilled labor with vital industries.
