The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) has revealed an impressive compliance rate with the ongoing price freeze on basic necessities, with only one establishment nationwide found potentially violating the measure.
Near-Perfect Compliance Nationwide
Out of 1,284 retail businesses monitored across the Philippines, approximately 99.92 percent have adhered to the price freeze regulations implemented following recent typhoons. The sole exception came from a Metro Manila establishment that now faces potential sanctions.
DTI Secretary Cristina Roque confirmed that the department issued a show-cause order to the business owner on Wednesday night, November 26, 2025. The establishment has been given 48 hours to explain the possible overpricing violation.
Price Freeze Background and Implementation
The 60-day price freeze on basic goods took effect on November 6, 2025, following Malacañang's declaration of a state of national calamity. This measure addresses the economic impact of Typhoon Tino (international name Kalmaegi) and Super Typhoon Uwan (international name Fung-wong).
Under the Price Act, or Republic Act 7581, prices of basic necessities in calamity areas automatically freeze at prevailing levels for 60 days. This remains in effect unless lifted earlier by the President.
Secretary Roque emphasized that DTI monitoring teams conduct daily inspections to ensure business compliance. "The DTI constantly upholds its responsibilities to consumers, working round-the-clock to implement the President's directive and guarantee that essential goods stay affordable and accessible, especially for the communities most affected by the calamities," she stated.
Market Normalization and Continued Monitoring
The DTI has assured the public that supermarket and grocery store operations have normalized after experiencing increased demand during the typhoon period. The department's regional and provincial offices have collaborated with local government units and the Office of Civil Defense to maintain uninterrupted delivery of goods to affected areas.
This coordinated effort ensures that essential commodities remain available and affordable for Filipino consumers during the recovery period from the recent natural disasters.
