A dedicated lounge for returning Cebuanos and visitors has officially opened its doors at Ayala Center Cebu, marking the start of the 2025 Balik Cebu Program. The lounge, which opened on January 7, 2025, provides a special space for balikbayans and tourists to unwind, reconnect with the community, and get the latest information on the Sinulog festival and other local events.
A 24-Year Legacy of Homecoming and Hospitality
Now in its 24th year, the Balik Cebu Program continues to be a vital bridge for overseas Filipinos, strengthening their connection to their roots while showcasing famous Cebuano hospitality to all visitors. The long-running initiative has significantly supported Cebu's tourism sector by fostering deep cultural ties and improving the overall experience for guests, especially during major celebrations like the Sinulog.
This year, however, the program is taking a more reflective and community-oriented approach. In a show of solidarity with fellow Cebuanos affected by the recent typhoons and earthquakes, the Balik Cebu Committee decided to forego its traditional welcome dinner and large-scale cultural shows. The focus has shifted towards activities that emphasize community, togetherness, and shared resilience in the face of challenges.
Officials and New Initiatives Launch the Program
The opening ceremony of the lounge was graced by key officials and stakeholders, including Cebu Governor Pam Baricuatro and Cebu City Mayor Nestor Archival. Also present were Cebu City Tourism Commissioner and Balik Cebu Project Chairperson Tetta Baad, representatives from the Department of Tourism Region 7, Judy Gabato and Gelena Asis Dimpas, as well as Mactan-Cebu International Airport Authority GM and CEO Julius Neri and Ayala Malls Inc. general manager Jia Sadol.
A new feature introduced for this year's festivities is the Balik Cebu passport. This interactive booklet includes a Sinulog passport guide and engaging games designed to encourage participants to fully immerse themselves in the festival's events and explore what Cebu has to offer.
Your Home Base During Sinulog
The Balik Cebu Lounge is conveniently located at Level 1, near the Guess store, in Ayala Center Cebu. Its primary goal is to make every balikbayan feel immediately welcome and at home. Furthermore, during the Sinulog festivities, a special viewing area will be set up exclusively for balikbayans to watch a live stream of the iconic Sinulog dance performances, ensuring they don't miss a beat of the action.
At its heart, Balik Cebu is a homecoming program that celebrates shared heritage, vibrant local traditions, and the unbreakable bond among Cebuanos worldwide. Through its curated activities and strong community engagement, the program truly embodies the joyful and devotional spirit of the Sinulog festival itself.
