DOT 7 Completes Comprehensive Training for Over 100 Volunteers Ahead of ASEAN Tourism Forum 2026 in Cebu
The Department of Tourism (DOT) Region 7 has successfully concluded an extensive training initiative, preparing more than 100 volunteers and service providers to support Cebu's pivotal role as host of the ASEAN Tourism Forum (ATF) 2026 and related ASEAN Summit meetings. This strategic move comes as the region anticipates a significant influx of international delegates later this month, marking a crucial step in bolstering the Philippines' tourism infrastructure.
Project Harana: A Foundation for Excellence in Hospitality
DOT 7 finalized Project Harana, an acronym for Hosting ASEAN with Readiness, Authenticity, Nationalism, and Agility, in December 2025. This program certified a diverse volunteer corps comprising students, university faculty members, and partner institutions, who are now poised to assist organizing committees and task groups across key venues in Cebu and Bohol. The training extended beyond volunteers to include tour guides, drivers, and event organizers, ensuring a cohesive and professional service network.
The modular training curriculum was meticulously designed to cover essential areas such as:
- Service Excellence: Emphasizing high standards in guest interactions and operational efficiency.
- Protocol and Etiquette: Providing guidelines for formal and informal settings during international events.
- Safety and Security: Equipping participants with protocols to handle emergencies and ensure delegate well-being.
- Destination Interpretation: Enhancing knowledge of local attractions and cultural heritage for effective storytelling.
Complemented by skills enhancement sessions, the program focused on practical application, with a dedicated service handbook issued to guide volunteers and providers in situational responses during the events. According to DOT 7 Officer-in-Charge Director Gelena Asis-Dimpas, this initiative ensures smooth hosting of the ATF and ASEAN Summit meetings, propelling the region forward on the tourism value spectrum.
Volunteer Insights and Enhanced Readiness
Volunteers have expressed heightened confidence and preparedness following the training. Simone Marie Golez from the University of San Carlos noted that the program offered valuable guidance on handling potential scenarios during the ATF and improving guest communication. Similarly, Maerey Rose Torayno of Cebu Technological University highlighted how sessions on structured communication and conflict resolution have bolstered her ability to manage guest interactions effectively.
ATF 2026: A Landmark Event for Philippine Tourism
The 45th edition of the ASEAN Tourism Forum, scheduled from January 27 to February 4, 2026, in Cebu, is a cornerstone of the Philippines' hosting of this year's ASEAN Summit. The ATF Travel Exchange, set for January 28 to 30, will convene tourism ministers, senior officials, exhibitors, buyers, and media from across Southeast Asia for trade meetings, networking sessions, and destination tours. This event marks the forum's return to the Philippines after a decade, underscoring the country's growing prominence in regional tourism.
Delegates will also enjoy pre- and post-event tours nationwide, with Cebu itineraries showcasing:
- Heritage sites and natural attractions
- Lifestyle offerings, including emerging golf tourism
In Bohol, tours will feature island destinations and landscapes recognized under its UNESCO Global Geopark designation, highlighting the Philippines' rich ecological and cultural diversity. This comprehensive approach not only supports the ATF but also promotes sustainable tourism development across the region.
