Tourism Secretary Frasco Addresses Politicking Allegations and Travel Tax Debate
Department of Tourism (DOT) Secretary Maria Christina Frasco has firmly denied accusations of using her position for political gain, stating she has no interest in running for any national office. In a forum held in Manila on Wednesday, January 21, 2026, Frasco emphasized her commitment to her role, responding to criticism about her visibility on DOT social media platforms and a recent magazine cover appearance.
Travel Tax Decision Left to Lawmakers
During the Kapihan sa Manila Prince forum, Secretary Frasco addressed the ongoing discussion about the travel tax imposed on Filipinos traveling overseas. She clarified that the DOT is deferring to the legislature on whether to scrap this tax, highlighting the need for careful consideration of alternative funding sources.
"We understand the recent concerns on travel taxes and we leave it to the wisdom of the legislature, whether or not to remove this imposition," Frasco stated. She pointed out that if the tax is eliminated, lawmakers must identify sustainable funding to support tourism infrastructure programs, which are crucial for the country's competitiveness.
Infrastructure Funding Challenges in 2026
Frasco revealed that funding for new tourism roads has been significantly reduced in 2026, with only approximately P3 billion allocated for continuing projects. This cut comes at a time when the Philippines ranks 69th out of 117 economies in tourism infrastructure development, based on international competitiveness data.
"We have a lot more to catch up on, but we need the funds to improve tourism infrastructure," she explained, underscoring the urgency of addressing these financial constraints to enhance the country's appeal to tourists.
DOT's Strategic Initiatives Amid Constraints
Despite the funding limitations, Secretary Frasco outlined the DOT's ongoing efforts to boost tourism. These include:
- Intensifying promotions in key international markets through the department's 12 foreign offices.
- Strengthening coordination with stakeholders, particularly local airlines, to increase capacity and lower airfares.
- Maintaining two social media platforms: one for corporate reporting and another for marketing purposes.
Frasco attributed her frequent appearance on DOT pages to her nonstop work ethic since her appointment, rather than any political motive.
Clarification on Political Ambitions
In response to allegations of self-promotion, Frasco was unequivocal about her lack of political aspirations. "I suspect that the accusation of self-promotion derives from that idea na tatakbo ako. Hindi po ako tatakbo, nandito lang ako para magtrabaho (that I will run for office. I will not, I am here to do my job)," she asserted, reinforcing her focus on her duties as Tourism Secretary.
This statement comes amid broader discussions on government accountability and the role of public officials in promoting national interests without personal political agendas.
