Founded in 794 AD, To-ji, whose name means "East Temple," has a deep historical significance. It was one of two massive guardian temples built to flank the main entrance to Heiankyo, the former name of Kyoto, marking the moment when Japan's capital was moved from Nara.
Architectural Wonders of the To-ji Complex
