The Philippine National Police (PNP) has significantly strengthened security protocols across the country's popular destinations to safeguard tourists and local vacationers during the busy holiday period. This heightened alert comes in response to a recent travel advisory issued by the Canadian government, which cautioned its citizens to remain vigilant if traveling to the Philippines.
Proactive Measures and Heightened Police Presence
In a statement released on Wednesday, December 17, 2025, PNP acting chief Lieutenant General Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. emphasized a proactive strategy to counter potential crimes and safety risks. He stated that the police force is taking the foreign advisory seriously and is committed to ensuring a secure environment for all visitors.
"We take these travel advisories seriously," Nartatez said. "We continue to closely monitor high-risk areas and coordinate with various agencies to prevent any potential threats. Tourists should feel reassured that we are on alert and ready to respond 24/7 to any incident."
The general highlighted that ensuring strong police visibility at beaches, airports, and historical sites is a top priority. Coordination with local government units, tourism offices, and community stakeholders is considered fundamental to this safety mission.
Community Vigilance and Nationwide Deployment
Beyond uniformed personnel, the PNP is actively promoting community involvement in safety efforts. The public, including tourists and residents, are encouraged to report any suspicious activities through official hotlines and mobile applications. Nartatez noted the expansion of community-based programs such as neighborhood watch groups, safe zones, and volunteer guide networks to enhance protection and emergency coordination.
"The safety and security of our tourists are also part of our mission to ensure the safety of every citizen," he affirmed.
To manage the seasonal influx of people, the PNP has deployed more than 100,000 police personnel nationwide. While no specific major threat has been detected for the holidays, the force remains on high alert. This state of vigilance was partly influenced by the tragic shooting at Bondi Beach in Sydney, Australia, which claimed at least 16 lives. Reports indicated the two gunmen involved had spent nearly a month in the Philippines during November.
Reassurance for the Public
Nartatez has directed field commanders to ensure a conspicuous police presence in crowded areas to reassure the public and deter potential troublemakers. He reiterated that the PNP's goal is to maintain the Philippines' reputation as a safe and beautiful destination where visitors can enjoy their stay while respecting local laws.
In related news, the Department of Migrant Workers confirmed that no Filipinos were harmed in the recent Sydney shooting incident. The PNP chief concluded with a final assurance: "We have not monitored any security threats, but the public can be assured that the police are on alert to ensure everyone’s safety."
