ZAMBOANGA. Personnel of the Philippine National Police-Maritime Group (PNP-MG) seized approximately P256,710 worth of smuggled cigarettes in Tawi-Tawi province, as confirmed by police on Friday, May 22, 2026.
Details of the Seizure
The operation took place on Thursday, May 21, at Gabang-Gabang Mini Port in Poblacion village, Bongao, Tawi-Tawi. The Tawi-Tawi Maritime Police Station (Marpsta) reported that officers conducted a mobile patrol operation following a tip about the transport and unloading of smuggled cigarettes at the port.
During the operation, authorities discovered six master cases of cigarettes, valued at P256,710, stacked in the docking area. The operatives immediately attempted to locate the owner of the tobacco products, but no one came forward or claimed ownership, according to the Tawi-Tawi Marpsta report.
Investigation and Disposition
Based on initial investigations, it is believed that the cigarettes were unloaded from a small boat and were intended for distribution to retailers in Bongao. The seized contraband was brought to the Tawi-Tawi Marpsta for documentation before being turned over to the Bureau of Customs Sub-Port Bongao for proper inventory and disposition. The operation was conducted with the support of other police units in the province.
The successful seizure highlights the ongoing efforts of the PNP-MG to curb smuggling activities in the region. Authorities continue to investigate the incident and are working to identify the individuals involved in the illegal transport of cigarettes.
