House Poverty Alleviation Committee Holds Inaugural Session in Pampanga

The House Committee on Poverty Alleviation, under the leadership of Pampanga Second District Representative Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, conducted its first regular session for the year at the Pampanga Provincial Capitol on Tuesday, January 20, 2026. This pivotal meeting marked a significant step in the committee's efforts to tackle poverty-related issues across the Philippines.

DepEd Presents Comprehensive Update on Nutrition Initiatives

During the session, the Department of Education (DepEd) provided a detailed briefing on the current status of its feeding and nutrition programs, with a primary focus on the School-Based Feeding Program (SBFP). DepEd officials confirmed that the SBFP is now fully operational and implemented nationwide, demonstrating the government's commitment to addressing child malnutrition.

Dr. Miguel Angelo Mantaring, representing the DepEd Bureau of Learner Support Services, delivered key statistics, revealing that 96 central kitchens are currently active, serving 34 school division offices. He further announced an ambitious target to expand this network to 219 kitchens across the country, aiming to enhance the program's reach and effectiveness.

Financial Allocations and Strategic Plans Unveiled

In addition to operational updates, DepEd outlined substantial financial plans to bolster the feeding program. The agency disclosed a proposed capital outlay of ₱1 billion, earmarked for the development of kitchen facilities and the improvement of food transport services. This investment is part of a broader strategy to ensure efficient and sustainable delivery of nutritious meals to learners.

Notably, the budget allocation per learner has been set at ₱25, reflecting a targeted approach to resource distribution. These measures are designed to optimize the program's impact and support long-term nutritional goals for students.

High-Level Attendance and Collaborative Emphasis

The meeting garnered significant attention from local and national officials, underscoring the importance of the poverty alleviation agenda. Attendees included Pampanga Governor Lilia Pineda and Vice Governor Dennis Pineda, alongside committee members such as Representatives Franz Pumaren, JC Abalos, Sarah Jane Elago, and Rolando Ledesma Macasaet.

During the discussions, officials unanimously emphasized the critical need for coordinated efforts among government agencies, local governments, and stakeholders. They highlighted that addressing child malnutrition and improving nutrition outcomes for learners require a unified and sustained approach, leveraging resources and expertise from various sectors.

This session not only reviewed progress but also set the stage for future initiatives aimed at reducing poverty and enhancing the well-being of Filipino children through education and nutrition programs.
