81-Year-Old Aeta Elder Achieves Educational Milestone Through ALS Program in Pampanga

In an inspiring testament to lifelong learning, Eduardo Saplala, an 81-year-old member of the Aeta Indigenous community from Barangay Camias in Porac, Pampanga, has graduated from the Alternative Learning System (ALS) of the Department of Education (DepEd). Saplala stands out as the oldest among 2,934 secondary education graduates in the province, showcasing that age is no barrier to educational achievement.

A Second Chance at Education and Life

Through the ALS program, implemented in partnership with the Provincial Government of Pampanga, Saplala was given a renewed opportunity to pursue his studies. This initiative not only focuses on academic completion but also aims to empower individuals by providing them with the tools to improve their lives. Saplala expressed that completing his education is a significant achievement that will help him and his community better understand their rights as Indigenous People, fostering greater awareness and advocacy.

Culminating Ceremony Honors Graduates and Interns

A culminating ceremony was held on Tuesday, January 20, 2026, at the Bren Z. Guiao Convention Center in the City of San Fernando to celebrate the achievements of the ALS graduates. The event also recognized 850 beneficiaries of the Government Internship Program (GIP), who have contributed as village teachers to support current ALS learners. Notable attendees included Pampanga Governor Lilia "Nanay" Pineda, Vice Governor Dennis "Delta" Pineda, and representatives from key agencies such as the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE), Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA), ALS, and DepEd.

During the ceremony, Governor Pineda delivered an encouraging message to the beneficiaries, stating in the vernacular, "No one will ever look down on you again, because you are now educated." She emphasized that this educational milestone serves as a key to changing the course of their lives, opening doors to new opportunities and personal growth.

Support and Opportunities for Graduates

To further assist the graduates, the Capitol distributed ₱2,000 in financial assistance to each individual, along with food packs as additional support for their families. DOLE highlighted that this graduation presents a great opportunity for ALS graduates to continue their education or secure better employment, enhancing their economic prospects. Some GIP beneficiaries have already been absorbed by agencies, institutions, and the provincial government where they rendered service, demonstrating the program's effectiveness in bridging education with practical workforce integration.

Proving That Barriers Can Be Overcome

The provincial government underscored that the ALS program exemplifies how age, life circumstances, or social status should not hinder one's pursuit of education. This initiative not only promotes literacy and skills development but also fosters inclusivity and resilience within communities. By supporting learners like Saplala, Pampanga sets a powerful example for educational advocacy across the Philippines, inspiring others to embrace learning at any stage of life.
