Mandaue City Offers 150 Scholarships Amid Over 900 Applications
Mandaue Offers 150 Scholarships, Over 900 Apply

The Mandaue City Government has announced that 150 scholarship slots are available this year, despite receiving more than 900 applications. The high number of applicants underscores the growing demand for educational assistance among students in the city.

High Demand for Scholarships

City Administrator Gonzalo Malig-on stated that the influx reflects strong public interest in the program, though it presents a significant challenge for the city. “We are happy to see such strong engagement in the city’s announcement, but at the same time, we feel sad because many qualified applicants cannot be accommodated,” Malig-on said.

Limited Funds and Merit-Based Selection

Limited funds restrict the number of scholars the Mandaue City Government can support, making it necessary to prioritize applicants based on merit. Under the administration of Mayor Thadeo Jovito “Jonkie” Ouano, the number of scholarship slots increased from 100 to 150, the highest allocation to date. However, Malig-on noted that this remains insufficient to cover all qualified candidates.

Applicants undergo a strict screening process, including interviews and evaluations based on objective standards. To ensure fairness, two separate interview panels assess candidates using standardized guidelines. Malig-on emphasized that there is no preferential treatment in the selection process. “There is no ‘palakasay’ or use of guarantee letters. The process is strictly based on merit,” he said.

Scholarship Benefits and Future Plans

Each selected scholar will receive P17,000 per semester and may enroll in any school in Cebu. Despite the limitations, Malig-on said education remains a priority of the current administration, with plans to expand the program in the future.

Meanwhile, the College Scholarship Grant and Advisory Board, through the Mandaue City Youth Development Office, released the list of applicants who will proceed to the panel interview stage.
