A Heartfelt Journey Through Autism: A Parent's Perspective on Acceptance and Hope
Over a recent weekend, I had the privilege of meeting a fellow parent whose child was newly diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). She candidly shared that her family is still navigating the early stages of this journey, expressing a wish that they had recognized the signs sooner. During our heartfelt conversation, I primarily listened, offering reassurance and insights into the broad spectrum of special needs. It was evident that she was still learning about the distinctions between conditions like ASD and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), a common challenge for many families starting out.
Reflecting on Our Own Family's Experience with Autism
This encounter brought back memories of our own family's path in 2016, when we first received the diagnosis for our son, Lance. In what felt like a serendipitous and blessed moment, we met a guardian on a public utility jeepney who introduced us to Applied Behavioral Analysis (ABA) Therapy through the SMLC Learning Center. Lance underwent ABA sessions for approximately two years, which played a crucial role in preparing him for formal education. Today, he is two years behind the typical school age and would technically be in Grade 8 this school year. Despite this delay, we are profoundly grateful for the significant progress he continues to achieve, as regularly noted by his advisers.
Autism Consciousness Week in the Philippines: A Time for Awareness and Advocacy
Every third week of January, the Philippines observes Autism Consciousness Week, established by Proclamation No. 711 issued by President Fidel V. Ramos on January 4, 1996. This important proclamation underscores the government's commitment to raising awareness about the challenges faced by autistic individuals and fostering communities that support their dignity, independence, and meaningful contributions to society. It serves as a reminder of the collective effort needed to build a more inclusive environment.
Extending Support and Understanding to Fellow Families
Inspired by this annual observance, I make it a point to reach out to other families walking a similar path. Accepting a lifelong condition like ASD is no easy feat; it requires time to understand that it is not an illness to be cured but a unique way of being to be embraced. In a recent interview, Mona Magno-Veluz, the National Spokesperson for the Autism Society Philippines (ASP), provided valuable insights. She explained that ASD stems from atypical brain development, with science yet to pinpoint a single cause. Using a relatable analogy, she described that if most people operate on an "iOS" system, individuals with ASD run on "Android"—they are not lesser, just different.
A Message of Hope and Strength for Autism Consciousness Week
As we mark this year's Autism Consciousness Week, I want to share our family's heartwarming journey with other parents of amazing children on the spectrum. There is always hope, and like the sunflower—now widely recognized as a symbol of autism advocacy—it represents happiness, positivity, and strength. These are the very qualities our children bring into our lives each day, illuminating our paths with resilience and joy.
