Just 48 hours after Typhoon Tino battered the Visayas region, a group of determined nursing graduates from Southwestern University PHINMA demonstrated extraordinary resilience. They walked into the November 2025 Philippine Nursing Licensure Examination (PNLE) with quiet courage, turning personal and environmental challenges into a historic academic achievement.
A Triumph Against All Odds
The university announced remarkable results from the recent board exams. A total of 323 new nurses have been licensed, with an exceptional 99.36% passing rate for first-time takers. The accomplishment is made even more significant by the presence of 14 topnotchers who ranked among the nation's best.
This success story unfolded against a backdrop of disrupted classes, community recovery efforts, and student exhaustion following the typhoon's passage. The performance stands as a powerful testament to the rigorous training and holistic preparation provided by the SWU PHINMA College of Nursing.
Inspiring Journeys to the Top
The stories of four top achievers highlight the perseverance and support that fueled their success.
Renee Masecampo, who placed 8th, transformed a personal crisis into motivation. During her fourth year, her father stopped supporting her studies. "It was heartbreaking," she shared. However, a scholarship offer changed her path. "Everything really does happen for a reason," Masecampo reflected, crediting her mother's unwavering support for reminding her to never give up.
Clarise Ann Bondoc, 9th placer, views nursing as a calling rooted in family legacy. "I'm the 11th nurse in my family," she said. Growing up watching her relatives show kindness and care cemented her dream. "This journey taught me that when your dream comes from the heart, every sacrifice becomes worth it."
Trixie Jo Kristiane Hermosisima and Frances Ann Nolasco both secured 10th place. Hermosisima spoke of overcoming overwhelming doubt during the exam by holding onto faith and a "glimpse of hope." Nolasco drew strength from her support system, who checked the topnotchers list first, believing in her potential even before she did. "Their faith strengthened mine," she stated.
Wisdom for Future Nurses
When asked for advice, the new topnotchers offered heartfelt guidance for aspiring students.
- Renee Masecampo: "Believe in yourself. Even when progress feels slow, keep showing up. Your efforts will carry you."
- Trixie Hermosisima: "Build your study habits early and keep going even when it gets tough. With faith and steady effort, nothing is impossible."
- Clarise Bondoc: "Work hard for your dreams, but don't forget to enjoy life... Never give up and always pray."
- Frances Nolasco: "Look at the bigger picture. Nursing is tough, but remember the people you will someday care for. That purpose will keep you going."
Dean Michelle Albina Bathan Yu of the College of Nursing shared a proud message, stating that the topnotchers reflect the core values nurtured at SWU PHINMA: hard work, compassion, and resilience.
"Their journey reminds us that with faith, determination, and persistence, no dream is too big and no challenge is insurmountable," Dean Yu said. She added that their success inspires everyone to keep believing and moving forward, regardless of obstacles.
By triumphing over a typhoon and personal hardships, these graduates have proven that resilience can indeed turn challenges into victories. Southwestern University PHINMA continues to set a high standard in nursing education, producing graduates who are not only competent professionals but also compassionate individuals ready to serve and lead in their communities.
