CTU Opens P29M Automation Lab, First in PH with SMC System
CTU Launches P29M Automation Training Facility in Cebu

Cebu Technological University has inaugurated a state-of-the-art training facility worth P29 million at its Main Campus, marking a significant advancement in technical education for Cebuano students seeking careers in automation and mechatronics.

First in the Philippines with Industrial-Grade Equipment

The newly opened laboratory, launched on November 28, 2025, features the FMS-200 Flexible Integrated Assembling System donated by Shoketsu SMC Corporation. This installation makes CTU the first university in the Philippines to possess such advanced industrial equipment.

During the ribbon-cutting ceremony, key officials including Terry Yeo (Country Manager), Imanol Palomar (SMC Spain Business Developer), and Carmina Valderama-Nate (Engineering and Marketing Manager) emphasized the donation's purpose in strengthening youth technical capabilities. They were joined by CTU staff and representatives from the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA).

Hands-On Experience with Advanced Technologies

The facility provides students with practical exposure to technologies rarely accessible in public educational institutions, including robotics, pneumatics, hydraulics, sensors, and quality-control systems. The equipment simulates actual assembly line processes, giving students real-world operational experience.

"What we want is for students to gain higher technical abilities," stated Valderama-Nate. "We also provided week-long training for faculty to ensure the equipment is used effectively," she added, highlighting the comprehensive approach to implementation.

Shared Facility for Regional Impact

Janice A. Alivio, Dean of CTU-College of Technology, explained that the laboratory won't be limited to the Main Campus. "CTU is promoting a shared facility because the equipment is expensive to procure. We want students from our external campuses to also experience hands-on training here," Alivio stated.

The facility will serve CTU campuses in Argao, Ginatilan, and Carmen when they begin offering mechatronics programs in the 2026-2027 academic year. Interest has also emerged from State Universities and Colleges in Eastern Visayas and Mindanao for benchmarking and practical studies.

Boosting Employability in Modern Industries

TESDA Regional Director Carlito Quintano emphasized the facility's role in helping the region adapt to modern requirements. "We are integrating 21st-century skills that match industry demand," he said, viewing this initiative as strengthening youth employability.

With free academic visits and coordination, the facility is expected to become a regional hub for automation learning, providing significant opportunities for students from public schools and rural areas aspiring to enter Cebu's more technical and modern industries.
