At 66, Lolo Felipe's Woodcarving Hands Defy Age in Poblacion Pardo
66-Year-Old Woodcarver Continues Craft After 40 Years

The Woodcarver Who Won't Retire

At 66 years old, when many would choose to rest and enjoy time with grandchildren, Felipe Tolin of Middle Tabucanal, Barangay Poblacion Pardo continues to pursue his passion with remarkable energy. Despite aging eyesight that has grown somewhat dim, his hands remain steady and skilled in the art of woodcarving that has sustained him for over four decades.

A Lifetime Dedicated to Craft

In his small workshop, the familiar sounds of sawing and the distinctive scent of freshly carved wood signal that Lolo Felipe remains actively dedicated to his craft. For more than 40 years, this has been his primary livelihood, transforming simple pieces of wood into keychains, decorations, and artistic designs that he sells at local markets.

Daily, he can be found sitting on his workbench, moving with a energy that defies his age. "I'm just thankful that people still buy my pieces even at thirteen to fifteen pesos each. This makes me happy because it means there are still people who appreciate my work and the wood itself," he shared while admiring a recently completed heart-shaped keychain.

More Than Just Woodcarving

Though his vision has weakened, his eyes still sparkle when he looks at the creations that have fed and educated his eight children. Woodcarving isn't his only occupation—when there are no woodcarving commissions, he works as a habal-habal driver to supplement the family income.

"When it's for family, there's no such thing as tiredness. As long as I'm able, I will continue working," he explained with determination evident in his gentle voice.

Though marked with age spots, his hands continue moving with purpose, his heart filled with love and inspiration. Felipe Tolin, the woodcraft artisan of Poblacion Pardo, serves as a living reminder that a true artist isn't measured by age or life circumstances, but by a heart willing to persevere no matter how many challenges time brings.

His story reminds us that true success isn't found in wealth or fame, but in continuing to do what you love—even amid difficulty, fatigue, and life's many trials.
