Davao City Office for Culture and the Arts Aims to Revive Theater Scene
Davao City OCA Plans to Revive Local Theater Groups

The Davao City Office for Culture and the Arts (OCA) has announced plans to establish a more robust support network for local theater groups in an effort to revive and sustain the performing arts in the city. Oscar Casaysay, head of the OCA, stated that the newly created office is still developing its programs and direction but is committed to assisting theater groups by tackling long-standing issues, particularly the shortage of rehearsal and performance venues.

Collaborative Approach to Revitalize Theater

Speaking at the Barangay 22-C Gymnasium on Tuesday, May 5, 2026, Casaysay emphasized the importance of collaboration. "We just need to help each other because financial support is not the only need. If we can pool our resources together, we can continue keeping Davao City's culture and arts alive," he said in a mix of English and Filipino. He dismissed claims that theater in Davao City is dying, asserting that as long as children remain interested in drama and social issues, theater will persist. Stage productions, he noted, serve as vital platforms for reflecting real-life community concerns.

Challenges in the Digital Age

Casaysay acknowledged that theater groups now face stiff competition from social media and digital entertainment. Many people prefer scrolling through social media over watching live performances, a trend that threatens the growth of theater and other performing arts. "If people completely lose interest in theater, it would be a huge loss to the arts community," he warned.

Children's Theater Performance Inspires Hope

Earlier on the same day, 19 children from I Dream of Light (IDOL), the theater group of the Tambayan Center for Children's Rights, Inc., showcased their talents at the Barangay 22-C Gymnasium. The group is scheduled to perform again on May 7 in Barangay 76-A and on May 8 in Barangay Talomo Proper, sharing not only their performances but also their personal stories.

Casaysay expressed hope that the OCA could help bring the theater group to other barangays in Davao City, encouraging more communities to stage their own productions. He also hoped the children's performance would inspire more young people to join theater and explore their talents in acting, singing, and dancing. "We hope people regain the enthusiasm to watch and support theater so we can continue this, but we will take it one step at a time," he said.
