LeBron James has informed the Los Angeles Lakers that he intends to leave and join another team for his 24th season in the National Basketball Association (NBA), which is expected to be his final season. The Lakers have accepted his decision.
Lakers express gratitude
Lakers governor Jeanie Buss released a statement acknowledging James's contributions. "LeBron James is one of the greatest athletes in history. We will always be thankful for his eight years with the Lakers -- including the title he led us to in 2020 under the toughest imaginable circumstances and the countless records he broke in purple and gold," Buss said. "We wish him all the best in the future, both on the court and off. He will always be a cherished part of the Lakers family."
James announces plans on social media
James took to social media to express his feelings about his tenure with the Lakers. "Truly an honor to wear the Lakers colours while trying to continue the greatness & legacies that came before me! Hope I made a few proud during my stint," he wrote on X, formerly Twitter.
James has instructed his agent, Klutch Sports CEO Rich Paul, to negotiate with interested teams as he decides where to play for the 2026-27 season, which will likely be his last.
Top suitors emerge
The Golden State Warriors are currently at the top of the list of potential destinations. Discussions have also included a possible return to the Cleveland Cavaliers or Miami Heat, both of which James led to NBA championships in the past. However, other teams are expected to make offers in the coming days.
Salary cap implications
James's departure will free up significant salary cap space for the Lakers, which they can use to acquire players to fill the void left by the 42-year-old four-time MVP, who turns 42 in December.
