A 72-year-old grandmother died after being hit by a speeding motorcycle on the national highway in Barangay Abugon, Sibonga town, at 7:07 p.m. on Thursday, May 21, 2026.
Victim and Driver Identified
The victim was identified as Socorro Ortiz, 72, a resident of the area. She was struck by a Yamaha XTZ 125 motorcycle driven by Jemboy Getarollas Becbec, 21, single, a third-year college student from Barangay Catolohan, Dalaguete town.
Driver Detained
Becbec is currently detained at the Sibonga Police Station, and charges are being prepared against him.
Investigation Details
According to the investigation by the Sibonga Police Station, the student was driving southbound when the victim suddenly crossed the road and was hit squarely by the motorcycle. Due to the strong impact, both the victim and the driver were thrown several meters away.
The victim sustained severe head and body injuries after hitting the concrete road. Both the victim and the student were rushed to the hospital. However, after a few minutes, the victim was declared dead at the Carcar District Hospital.
