Authorities in Rwanda have closed border crossings connecting the country with the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) in Rubavu district following a new outbreak of the Ebola virus in the DRC. The closure was announced on Sunday by Prosper Mulindwa, Mayor of Rubavu District in Rwanda's Western Province.
Temporary Border Closure
Mulindwa told local media that the border points linking Goma and Rubavu-Gisenyi will remain closed for an indefinite period. This measure is part of efforts to prevent the spread of the deadly disease.
"The borders connecting Goma and Gisenyi have been temporarily closed in response to the Ebola outbreak. We will continue engaging with our residents to explain why this decision was made," Mulindwa said.
The mayor urged residents to remain patient and cooperative, emphasizing that the decision was made to protect public health and prevent potential infections in communities.
Health Screening Continues
Despite the temporary closure, health authorities continue to screen Rwandans crossing from the DRC, as well as Congolese citizens returning home. These individuals are still permitted to use the border under strict health monitoring procedures, according to local media reports.
Ebola Outbreak Details
The number of deaths in the latest Ebola outbreak in the DRC has risen to 87, as reported by the Africa Centers for Disease Control and Prevention on Saturday. Health officials have warned that the outbreak involves the "Bundibugyo strain," for which no specific vaccine is currently available. This strain poses a high risk of spreading across the region.
