Cebu City Mayor Nestor Archival ordered the suspension of classes at all levels in both public and private schools until further notice on Thursday, July 9, 2026, following volcanic ashfall from the eruption of Kanlaon Volcano. The directive came as residents in Cebu faced potential health risks from the ash.
DOH 7 Issues Health Advisory
The Department of Health (DOH) 7 warned residents of possible respiratory problems, skin and eye irritation, and other health risks due to ashfall from Mt. Kanlaon. DOH 7 Director Joshua Brillantes, in an online press conference on Thursday, advised the public to avoid unnecessary outdoor activities because fine ash particles may still be inhaled, especially when masks are not properly fitted.
Brillantes stated that ashfall exposure can trigger immediate health effects, including respiratory issues, skin irritation from components like sulfur, and eye irritation. Those who need to go outside are urged to wear properly fitted N95 or KN95 masks, which filter small airborne particles and offer better protection against ash exposure.
Vulnerable Groups at Higher Risk
The DOH reminded the public to protect vulnerable groups such as children, infants, people with asthma, and those with chronic lung diseases, cancer, or other comorbidities. These individuals are more susceptible to complications and secondary infections from ash inhalation.
Additionally, DOH 7 noted potential mental and emotional stress among affected communities, particularly those who cannot leave their homes due to health conditions or other limitations.
