Government efforts to protect the Philippines' unique wildlife have been reinforced with the recent turnover of nine confiscated birds to environmental authorities in Central Luzon.

Confiscated Parrots Placed Under DENR Care

On January 20, 2026, the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) formally took custody of nine Philippine Hanging Parrots. The birds, scientifically known as Loriculus philippensis, were turned over by the Philippine National Police (PNP) to the Community Environment and Natural Resources Office (CENRO) in Olongapo City.

The handover was conducted by the PNP Maritime Group–Regional Maritime Unit 3, led by PCPL Jayson Montesa of the Olongapo City Maritime Police Station. The parrots are now under the DENR's care and jurisdiction for proper handling, documentation, and the filing of a corresponding case.

A Critically Endangered Species

The Philippine Hanging Parrot, locally called "Kulasisi," is a species facing severe threat. It is officially classified as Critically Endangered under DENR Administrative Order No. 2019-09, highlighting the urgency of its protection.

Edward Sernadilla, the head of CENRO Olongapo, stated that the seized wildlife will undergo inquest proceedings. Charges are being prepared for filing before the proper court, in strict adherence to the country's wildlife laws and regulations.

A Shared Responsibility for Wildlife Protection

DENR Regional Executive Director Ralph Pablo emphasized that safeguarding wildlife is a collective duty. He reiterated the agency's firm commitment to enforcing Republic Act No. 9147, the Wildlife Resources Conservation and Protection Act.

"According to our law, it is illegal to collect, possess, trade, import, or export wildlife in the Philippines without the necessary permits," Director Pablo stressed. He called on the public to remain vigilant and to immediately report any suspected illegal wildlife trade or related activities to environmental authorities.

This incident underscores the ongoing collaboration between law enforcement and environmental agencies in combating wildlife trafficking, a critical step in preserving the nation's rich biodiversity for future generations.
