Major Boost for Caraga's Tuna Fisherfolk
The Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) in Davao has delivered a significant asset to the fishing community of Caraga, Davao Oriental. A new, fully-equipped 62-foot Fiberglass Reinforced Plastic (FRP) tuna handline fishing boat was formally turned over to benefit the Community Fish Landing Center (CFLC) located in Barangay Santiago. This initiative is designed to enhance the primary livelihood of many residents in the municipality.
Equipped for Success and Sustainable Operations
The vessel, handed over on January 18, 2026, is more than just a boat. It comes complete with essential gear and accessories, including six "pakura" or small motorized catcher boats. This comprehensive package is expected to substantially increase the efficiency and reach of tuna handline fishing operations in the area.
The beneficiary is the Santiago Farmers and Fisherfolk Association, whose members expressed deep gratitude for the government's support. They recognize the vessel as a transformative tool that will greatly improve their economic prospects.
Leadership Emphasizes Responsibility and Sustainability
During the turnover, local and national officials highlighted the importance of responsible use. Caraga Mayor Ronie S. Osnan personally appealed to the beneficiaries to utilize the asset properly. "I urge you to properly use what has been provided by BFAR and our government. This will be a great help to your livelihood," Mayor Osnan stated.
BFAR National Director Elizer S. Salilig echoed this sentiment while framing the support within a broader context. He reminded the community of the Philippines' abundant natural resources and the opportunity to build a better life at home. "My challenge to you is to use these blessings properly and sustainably," Director Salilig emphasized, underscoring that increased catch must go hand-in-hand with resource conservation.
Part of a Broader Regional Program
This fishing boat is not an isolated grant. It belongs to the second batch of 62-foot FRP boats allocated for the Davao region under BFAR's flagship Capacitating Municipal Fisherfolk Program. The program's core objectives are clear:
- Strengthen the capacity of local fishing communities.
- Maximize production from capture fisheries, especially in tuna-rich grounds.
- Contribute to lasting sustainable livelihoods and regional food security.
By focusing on strategic support like this, BFAR aims to create a more resilient and prosperous fishing sector in Caraga and throughout the Davao region.
