Teenager's Heroic Acts Shine Amidst Typhoon Devastation
In the midst of the chaos and destruction wrought by Typhoon Tino (Kalmaegi) on November 4, 2025, a beacon of hope emerged from the flooded town of Liloan in Cebu. Jayboy Magdadaro, a 15-year-old Grade 9 student at Jubay Integrated School, displayed extraordinary bravery by rescuing approximately 50 individuals from drowning.
A Day of Relentless Rescue
As floodwaters rapidly rose, Magdadaro fearlessly ventured into treacherous conditions, battling strong winds and powerful currents. Using a small boat and a salbabida (lifebuoy), he worked tirelessly from morning until dusk. His efforts focused on the most vulnerable, saving children, pregnant women, and the elderly who were stranded in his community.
His mother, Alma Magdadaro, shared her mixed emotions in a Cebuano interview on November 11, 2025. She expressed overwhelming joy at the support her son received but also deep concern for his safety. "My son is helpful ever since, often assisting elderly individuals by guiding them to their destinations," she said, adding that she had not expected him to undertake such a dangerous mission.
Driven by his determination to help, Jayboy did not stop to eat during his marathon rescue operation. The physical toll was significant, and he developed a fever the following day.
Recognition and a Brighter Future
Jayboy's courage did not go unnoticed. In a heartwarming turn of events, Mabolo Barangay Captain Daniel Francis Arguedo granted him a full scholarship for his chosen course. The scholarship covers all school fees and provides a monthly allowance of P3,000. On the same day, the municipality of Liloan also extended a full scholarship to the young hero.
This support will help Jayboy achieve his dream of pursuing a degree in criminology, a path he chose to further his desire to serve and help people. His commitment to service was evident even before the typhoon, as he was an active youth volunteer, serving as support staff for the Sangguniang Kabataan (SK).
His heroism stands in stark contrast to the grim reality faced by Liloan, which reported the highest death toll in Cebu Province with 35 fatalities from the typhoon. Jayboy Magdadaro has become a powerful symbol of courage and hope, proving that even in the darkest times, light and selflessness can prevail.
