Cebu Province Issues Jellyfish Safety Guidelines for Summer Swimmers
Cebu Province Issues Jellyfish Safety Guidelines

The summer season brings water activities such as swimming in pools and the sea. However, this period also sees the emergence of jellyfish, which can cause itching, swelling, difficulty breathing, and more severe effects upon contact with skin.

Provincial Government Issues Guidelines

The Cebu Provincial Government has provided public guidelines to ensure the safety of swimmers. Among the first steps to take are quickly leaving the water, washing the wound with seawater, and using tweezers, gloves, or the edge of a card to remove any remaining tentacles.

First Aid Measures

To reduce skin pain, the affected area can be soaked in hot water for 20 to 45 minutes. If difficulty breathing, chest tightness, dizziness, fainting, vomiting, or muscle pain occur, the person must be brought immediately to the nearest hospital.

On May 19, the Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (MDRRMO) of Argao town reported sightings of jellyfish along the coastline, including the town port. The public is advised not to touch jellyfish, especially small ones that may appear dead.

A similar situation was observed in Moalboal town last month, temporarily halting island hopping and snorkeling activities in the area.
