Jayson Mama to Face Angel Ayala in Mexico on May 21

One-time world title challenger Jayson Mama is set to face former world champion Angel Ayala in a 10-round bout at the Arena CDMX in Mexico City on May 21, 2026. The 28-year-old Filipino boxer is working to rebuild his career after a series of setbacks in his most significant fights.

Mama's Recent Struggles

Mama emerged as a promising prospect and earned his first world title shot in 2021 against IBF flyweight champion Sunny Edwards in Dubai. He lost that bout by unanimous decision. In 2024, he fell short against Juan Carlos Camacho in a WBO flyweight title fight in Puerto Rico, losing by a controversial split decision. Most recently, Mama suffered a fifth-round stoppage loss to Ricardo Malajika in an IBO super-flyweight title fight in South Africa last year.

Ayala's Career Path

Ayala, meanwhile, is coming off a loss in his last fight. He defended his IBF flyweight belt against Masamichi Yabuki in Japan and lost by a 12th-round technical knockout, marking his first career defeat. Ayala had won the IBF title in 2024 by knocking out Dave Apolinario, Mama's teammate, in the sixth round in Mexico. Despite the loss, Ayala remains ranked No. 5 by the WBC and No. 13 by the WBO in the flyweight division.
