The United States is currently negotiating with Denmark regarding plans to expand its military presence in Greenland. According to reports, the US aims to establish three new military bases in the southern part of Greenland to prepare for possible Russian and Chinese activities in the North Atlantic region.
Background of Tensions
It will be recalled that there was a previous conflict between Denmark and the US after US President Donald Trump announced intentions to take over the island, citing fears that Russia and China might seize it. However, Denmark and Greenland strongly opposed any idea of territorial takeover.
Diplomatic Talks Continue
Despite these tensions, diplomatic talks between the two countries continue. Denmark has confirmed ongoing negotiations with the US regarding a possible increased military presence in Greenland but declined to provide further details.
It was learned that the planned military base would be built in Narsarsuaq, a US military facility with a small airport. The base will focus on maritime surveillance, monitoring ship movements and military activities in the GIUK Gap—a crucial route between Greenland, Iceland, and the United Kingdom.
No Final Agreement Yet
So far, no final agreement has been reached between the two countries regarding the reestablishment of US military bases. The discussions do not include any US plan to control or take over Greenland.
Currently, the US has only one military base in Greenland—the Pituffik Space Base—compared to the Cold War era when the US operated 17 facilities.
