27th Diocesan Pentecost Vigil Draws Thousands in Northern Samar

Northern Samar – Thousands of pilgrims participated in the rosary and procession held as part of the 27th Diocesan Pentecost Vigil and Family Day 2026 in San Antonio, Northern Samar, on May 23, 2026. The event, hosted by the Parish of St. Anthony of Padua, drew an estimated 6,000 attendees from across the diocese.

Preparations and Anticipation

Following the announcement by Bishop Nolly C. Buco during the Pentecost celebration in Bobon, Northern Samar, on June 7–8, 2025, that the next Pentecost would be held in San Antonio, parishioners felt a mix of joy and apprehension. The challenge was accepted without hesitation, and planning began immediately. As a member parish of the Diocese of Catarman, located on an island, every plan was carefully prepared over five months.

Understanding Pentecost

Pentecost celebrates the descent of the Holy Spirit on the Apostles, 50 days after Easter. The Acts of the Apostles (2:1–11) describes strong wind and tongues of fire, symbolizing the powerful action of the Holy Spirit and the renewal it brings. This event is considered the birthday of the Church, empowering Christians to continue Jesus' mission.

Arrival of Pilgrims

Pilgrims began arriving early, traveling by motorboats to the island. Excitement was palpable as they saw the island paradise. From morning until afternoon, the arrival was unceasing, with people from towns near and far. Island residents warmly welcomed them, with greetings and joy evident everywhere.

The Procession and Activities

The procession encircled the town, with each pilgrim offering prayers and rosaries. The host island ensured safety and comfort, with coffee stands, medics, ushers, police, barangay tanods, Knights of Columbus, and other volunteers stationed at their posts. A program included dancing, singing, video presentations on local Church history, testimonies, Holy Hour, and confession.

Highlights and Conclusion

The Mass, celebrated by Bishop Nolly C. Buco with the clergy, was the highlight. Joy and unity filled the gathering, mirroring the outpouring of the Holy Spirit. The presence of God the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit was deeply felt. This largest gathering on Paradise Island will be cherished and passed down as a defining moment in faith and life.
