University of Assumption Establishes Language and Culture Center with KWF
UA and KWF Launch Language and Culture Center Partnership

The University of the Assumption (UA) has taken a significant step toward advancing linguistic and cultural heritage in Central Luzon with the establishment of the Sentro ng Wika at Kultura (SWK). This initiative, formalized through a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Komisyon sa Wikang Filipino (KWF), aims to bolster the teaching, research, and promotion of Filipino and indigenous languages across the region.

Strengthening Regional Language Initiatives

Reggie O. Cruz, Commissioner of the Kapampangan Language at KWF, highlighted that the SWK will function as a regional hub for language, literature, and cultural programs. Administered under the Office of the KWF Chairperson, the center collaborates closely with the Commission to drive national language projects, with a particular focus on the local dialects of the host school and community. Cruz emphasized that the SWK serves as a vital partner in fulfilling KWF's mandate to protect and develop the Filipino language, offering academic institutions opportunities to organize activities, especially during the annual Language and Literature Month.

Key Programs and Support Mechanisms

Through the SWK, UA will host various Tertulya programs, such as the Tertulyang Pangwika and Tertulyang Pampanitikan, which foster discussions on language and literature. KWF supports these efforts by providing newly published books and offering services in partnership with local government units to promote the use of Filipino and local languages in official correspondence and public communication. This collaboration ensures that language promotion is integrated into both academic and civic spheres.

Leadership Commitment and Future Collaborations

KWF Chairperson Marites A. Barrios-Taran underscored that the MOU reflects a strong commitment to sustained language promotion and collaboration. UA President Oliver G. Yalung, along with Director of the Center for Language and Culture Roilingel P. Calilung, expressed full support and confidence in the partnership. Under the agreement, KWF and UA will conduct joint seminars, training programs, conferences, publications, and other academic and cultural initiatives, positioning UA as a regional center for research on language, literature, and culture.

Emphasis on Sustained Collaboration

KWF Commissioner for Programs and Projects Carmelita C. Abdurahman, who attended the signing, stressed the importance of ongoing collaboration between government and academia in advancing the Filipino language and enriching Philippine culture. This partnership not only enhances linguistic diversity but also strengthens cultural identity in Central Luzon, setting a precedent for similar initiatives nationwide.
