Philippines Intensifies Battle Against National Sleep Epidemic
The Philippine Society of Sleep Medicine, in partnership with the Department of Health, is significantly ramping up initiatives to promote sleep health among Dabawenyos and Filipinos nationwide. This intensified effort was highlighted during the 19th Annual Convention and Regional Caravan, held under the theme "Journey to Good Sleep: Empowering Clinicians in Elevating Sleep Health" from March 18 to 20, 2026, at Acacia Hotel Davao.
Confronting a Critical Public Health Crisis
The gathering united medical professionals, stakeholders, and partners to address what experts are now describing as a severe and growing "sleep epidemic" across the country. Sleep deprivation remains a serious public health concern, with medical professionals revealing alarming statistics. The Philippines has been ranked as the most sleep-deprived nation in Southeast Asia and the fourth most sleep-deprived globally. Reports indicate that nearly 60 percent of Filipinos suffer from inadequate sleep, highlighting the scale of this pervasive issue.
Health Risks and Biological Imperative
Dr. Jimmy Chang, President of the Philippine Society of Sleep Medicine, emphasized during the convention that lack of sleep is directly linked to a wide range of serious health problems. These include weakened immunity, cardiovascular diseases, mental health disorders, and significantly reduced productivity. "Sleep is biologically imperative. It's a need, not a luxury. It should not be sacrificed; it should be prioritized," Dr. Chang stated emphatically. He further stressed that developing and empowering highly competent clinicians is absolutely crucial to ensure more Filipinos, especially residents of Davao, can access timely and effective care for complex sleep conditions.
Launch of Project Himbing: A National Sleep Awareness Campaign
Reinforcing its commitment to public health, the Philippine Society of Sleep Medicine launched Project Himbing, a comprehensive national sleep health awareness campaign conducted in close collaboration with government agencies and various stakeholders. This major initiative aims to promote the critical importance of quality sleep and encourage healthier daily habits among the Filipino population. "The role of this convention is not just to raise awareness in the community, but also to increase the number of specialists," explained Dr. Eden Castro, a PSSM fellow and publicity head.
The project will be implemented through an extensive regional caravan that brings together healthcare professionals, local partners, and community stakeholders. It will feature:
- Expert-led discussions on sleep science and disorders
- Comprehensive training sessions for clinicians
- Networking opportunities designed to strengthen local capacity
These activities are specifically crafted to enhance the delivery of sleep health services while simultaneously raising awareness at the community level.
Sleep as a Foundational Health Priority
Dr. Ellenieta Gamolo, Regional Director of the DOH-Davao Center for Health Development, underscored sleep as a critical and foundational pillar of overall health. Dr. Gamolo noted that based on available data, many Filipinos consistently sacrifice rest due to pressing work demands, heavy academic responsibilities, and prolonged screen time from digital devices. "Adequate rest is not merely a comfort; it is a vital pillar of physical health, mental well-being, productivity, and overall quality of life," she added. The Department of Health reaffirmed its guiding principle, "Bawat Pilipino, Ramdam ang Kalusugan," emphasizing equitable access to healthcare and the paramount importance of preventive measures, which now explicitly include cultivating healthy sleep habits.
Empowering Communities Through Comprehensive Sleep Awareness
Both the Philippine Society of Sleep Medicine and the Department of Health are urgently calling on all Filipinos to make sleep a daily priority by adopting habits that strengthen the body, sharpen the mind, and improve the capacity to learn, work, and serve effectively. Through robust initiatives like Project Himbing, stakeholders aim to empower communities nationwide to adopt better sleep practices. This concerted effort is ultimately designed to contribute to significantly improved health outcomes and enhanced overall well-being across the entire country, marking a pivotal step in addressing this national health challenge.
