Cebu Mother Accuses Hospital of Negligence Leading to Infant's Death
A mother in Cebu City has filed allegations against the staff of Cebu City Medical Center (CCMC), accusing them of negligence that she claims resulted in the death of her unborn child. The incident, which occurred on January 21, 2026, has gained significant attention after the mother, Apol Amahan, shared her story in a viral social media post detailing the tragic events.
Delayed Referral and Critical Condition
According to Amahan, she was admitted to CCMC for childbirth but required transfer to Vicente Sotto Memorial Medical Center (VSMMC) due to complications. However, the referral process was delayed by four to five hours because of her thyroid condition. During this time, she was reportedly informed that CCMC could not provide care due to a lack of available doctors, leaving her waiting without proper medical attention.
Upon finally being transferred to VSMMC, Amahan's condition had deteriorated to a critical state, necessitating an emergency cesarean section. Doctors at VSMMC allegedly told her that if the referral had been expedited, there was a high probability that her baby could have been saved, highlighting the severe consequences of the delay.
Mother's Emotional Account and Demands
In her emotional post, Amahan expressed frustration and grief, questioning why CCMC had not acted sooner given her known thyroid issues. She recounted paying for prenatal visits at the hospital over four months, trusting in their care, only to face what she describes as abandonment in her time of need. She mentioned that despite no obstetrician being on duty, staff attempted to assist, but the situation escalated beyond control.
Amahan has vowed to gather strength and resources to pursue legal action against CCMC, citing names of doctors and nurses involved in her referral form. She is calling for accountability from the hospital administration to prevent similar incidents from affecting other expectant mothers in the future.
Hospital Response and Ongoing Investigation
As of the latest reports, the administration of Cebu City Medical Center has not issued an official statement regarding these allegations. The lack of response has left many in the community concerned about patient safety and hospital protocols in Cebu City. This case underscores broader issues in maternal healthcare and the urgent need for transparency and improved emergency procedures in medical facilities.
