Dr. Fritz Legarde Espedilla, an aesthetic dermatologist and surgeon, clinical sexologist, and lawyer, has addressed a common Facebook claim that drinking coconut water with lemon juice can dissolve kidney stones. In a column for Sunstar Davao, she explained that while the drink is healthy, it is not a miracle cure.
Facebook Claim vs. Medical Reality
A reader named Farah asked Dr. Fritz about the viral Facebook post suggesting the cocktail as an alternative treatment. Dr. Fritz praised Farah for being skeptical and seeking professional advice before trying it. She stated, “Coconut water with lemon juice is a refreshing cocktail and a great choice for hydration, but if we’re being real, it’s not exactly ‘Liquid Drano’ for your kidneys.”
Why It Helps, But Doesn't Dissolve
Dr. Fritz broke down the science: Lemon juice contains citrate, which binds to calcium in urine, preventing new stones from forming and stopping small stones from growing. Coconut water provides potassium and hydration, which help flush the system and reduce urine acidity. This alkalization is particularly effective for uric acid stones, which can sometimes be dissolved by changing urine pH.
However, she emphasized that these effects are preventive, not curative. Existing stones, especially larger ones, cannot be dissolved by this drink. She warned against relying on social media remedies without medical consultation.
